Giles watched her with some concern. He hadn't objected to her leaving the Hellmouth for the summer. He hadn't felt much like spending time in his beloved library himself, even after the damage caused by the Master opening the Hellmouth had been repaired. Her reaction to her survival seemed all out of proportion to the event. She wasn't bouncing back like he'd expected her to. He was beginning that something more had happened to Buffy that night than almost drowning.
He'd taken note of her perceptible increase in speed and strength but hadn't received any useful information from the Council to explain it. They seemed to be honoring his desire for independence a little to well. He was also sure that some of the more traditionalist members of the Council's ruling board were disappointed that she'd actually survived her encounter with such a well known master vampire. Quentin Travers could be such a controlling git with a tendency to view slayers as replaceable, he thought, but at least he was actually on his side.
The summer had flown by for Buffy. She'd spent a rather intense month in LA exercising her father's credit limit while Dawn was out reconnecting with the friends she'd left behind when they'd moved to Sunnydale. And then their mother had dropped them off in Connecticut for a month with her parents while she flew to Europe on a buying trip for her gallery.
That had only distracted her for so long. She'd snuck into the city several times that month to burn off excess energy among the undead of New York. But it hadn't really helped. At the back of her mind was the constant reminder that, like ninety percent of all slayers, she actually hadn't survived more than a year as the slayer before dying. She was just luckier than most that what had killed her had been so mild. And she was fairly sure she'd been actually dead, no matter that Giles and Willow claimed that Xander wouldn't have been able to bring her back if she were really dead.
When she'd returned to Sunnydale she'd admittedly behaved badly. She still occasionally caught a glimpse of something almost broken in Willow's eyes. It had taken over a month before her friendship with Willow was close to what it had been before the summer. Xander? He on the other hand had just been amused, once he'd gotten over the shock, and teased her about fulfilling more of his fantasies some time. And she was pretty sure she'd cured Cordelia Chase of her hero worship.
[Career Day is a little early this year]
[A Willow in Blue? Don't ask...]
[A Terakan on the windshield]
[One slayer too many?]
